Women make up 50 percent of the world’s population and every one of them will go through menopause. Unfortunately, far too many of women will do so without a comprehensive—or even adequate—understanding of what is happening to their bodies and moods during this transition. Menopause brings about the end of menstruation, but there is much more to know about the journey and long-term health implications.
Menopause is different for every woman. Some experience multiple, severe symptoms, while others have an easy transition. But one thing is certain: Menopause is more than hot flashes and it doesn’t happen overnight. In addition to possible physical, emotional, and cognitive effects, there are also societal and workplace implications for women during menopause.
In today’s episode, Donna Klassen, co-founder of Lets Talk Menopaus, a non-profit organization championing women’s health, shares why there needs to be in depth conversations about menopause on a personal and legislative level.
Let’s Talk Menopause (LTM) is on a mission to culturally kick-start a movement. For too long, menopause has been a shrouded subject. LTM want to spark a conversation about menopause so people understand it and talk openly about it. The less alone women feel, the better their menopause experience will be. That’s why we’re launching a multilingual public awareness campaign. By putting the topic out there physically—on posters in transit stations and doctors’ offices—and sharing it on social media, LTM aims to educate the public about what menopause is and why it’s essential that we all know the facts.
