All humans negotiate, and all negotiations, no matter how big or small, rely on the techniques of discovery and fluidity. Discovery involves learning the other party’s true desires and fluidity involves taking whatever form is needed to find a way through. These same two qualities equate to tactics used in martial arts. Applying the martial arts techniques helps in mastering the art of negotiation.

The soft skill of negotiation isn’t broadly taught and therefore is mostly developed through trial and error. Yet techniques from the martial arts correlate with skills needed in negotiation — such as the ability to disengage from oneself, to attain a state of calmness, to practice acute observation and to quiet the mind. These techniques will give negotiators an edge over their opponents.
