In psychology, we teach that whatever your thoughts are about a situation determines what you feel. What you feel then tells your body how to respond. Unfortunately, when we have conditioned ourselves to respond in a reactive or unhealthy way, it can become a habit. The rule of thumb is to recognize the spike of emotion you are feeling to give you a warning that you are about to engage in that habit. Once you recognize this, it gives you an opportunity to change that behavior and create a new, healthier habit.
