Who are you?

Who are you? | Katie Hulbert

Posted on February 23, 2018April 3, 2019 by James Miller

Many times people have unrealistic expectations for us. We often, and realistically, can’t meet those demands and it causes us to question ourselves. Life’s circumstances will also dictate your value and your worth. In psychology we have a term called, “peeling the onion” which is analogous to our identity. When Learn more…

Episode Summary

Jessica Baum, LMHC, licensed psychotherapist and author of Safe: Coming Home to Yourself and Others, joins James Miller on LIFEOLOGY® Radio to explore how attachment patterns shape our relationships, nervous system responses, and sense of emotional safety.

Jessica explains how secure, anxious, avoidant, and disorganized attachment patterns develop, why attachment theory is often oversimplified, and how people can begin to earn security even if they did not grow up with it. She also discusses the role of co-regulation, emotional presence, inner protectors, and safe relationships in healing relational wounds.

In this conversation, James and Jessica discuss why dysregulation is not failure, why love alone does not always create secure attachment, and why healing often requires safe connection with others rather than isolation. Jessica also shares insights from Safe, including the Wheel of Attachment, the importance of attunement, and how attachment patterns can show up not only in romantic relationships, but also in family systems, friendships, and the workplace.

I am looking forward to this. You were on my show years ago when you talked about your first book, Anxiously Attached, and I’ve used it so many times with my clients. In fact, I’ve read it as well, obviously, but it was something that really impacted me too. So I’m really glad to be able to talk about your second book, Safe.

With attachment theory, what was it about that specifically drew you to that methodology and that theory?

Jessica Baum, LMHC:
Well, in Anxiously Attached, I talk about being in the hospital and suffering from anxiety and panic attacks. I remember grabbing Facing Codependency, and I was like, “Oh my God, I finally have words for what I’m experiencing.” It helped me feel a lot less crazy, and it kind of started my path toward healing.

Author Jennifer Cramer-Miller talks about her memoir Incurable Optimist, which shares how she overcame being diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease. Incurable-Optimist.com #gratitude #incurableoptimist #chronichope #author #shewritespress

SHOW NOTES
--------------------

Jennifer Cramer-Miller was a twenty-two-year-old with a promising job, a lively boyfriend, and a cozy apartment. Then she was diagnosed with an incurable autoimmune disease, and suddenly, rather than planning for a bright future, she found herself soaking a hospital pillow with tears. When survival depends on expert doctors, selfless strangers, and benevolent loved ones—how do you let go of the life you've planned and accept the one you've been given?

In today’s episode, Jennifer talks with us about her book  INCURABLE OPTIMIST: LIVING WITH ILLNESS AND CHRONIC HOPE. Three-plus decades and four kidney transplants later, Jennifer’s memoir explores the tightrope of uncertainty, the will to survive, and the determination to find joy. She shines a bright light on the power of people helping people with a story that will inspire you to hug the humans you love. Because sometimes...it's the sorrows that threaten to pull us apart that ultimately unite us with hope

Adam Marburger @adammarburger talks about his Book You're the Problem: A Guide to Getting out of Your Own Way which offers straight talk about taking self-responsibility. Adammarburger.com

--------------------
SHOW NOTES
--------------------

Listen to the audio version of this interview.

Adam Marburger remembers distinctly when his high school guidance teacher told the 18-year-old “You are a loser; you’ll never amount to anything.” After all, he thought he was pretty hot stuff, living on his own in a house full of friends, living it up and partying all the time, working and making his own money. But it struck a chord and lit a fire under him.

It wasn’t the right kind of motivation. But now after building six massively successful companies and operating them simultaneously – one in the insurance business for auto and RV dealers nationwide, two in real estate, one in martial arts, and another in the Dental industry as well as one in coaching and personal development—he’s figured out the real difference between what we tell ourselves and authentic success personally and professionally. And he’s sharing it in his candid new book, You’re the F*cking Problem: A Guide to Getting Out of Your Own Way.

The gentle approach to self-improvement doesn’t hit the mark for some people. Adam is the answer for those who need a real wake-up call in the language that gets through to them. In his unique earthy way, he offers straight talk about taking responsibility for the life you have and the life you want to have.

Adam’s is indeed a more positive, uplifting, and encouraging approach to making the changes that lead to getting unstuck than what he received at 18! Adam offers a solid blueprint for setting yourself up for genuine success—the success that creates self-honesty and self-awareness, great relationships, fulfillment, and, yes, even financial well-being.

Adam tells of the setbacks that humbled him, including having a partner embezzle the money that collapsed a successful company, tarnishing his reputation in the industry where he was trusted. Having to start over. The loss of a long-term marriage. These are factors that made him step back and take a hard look at his life and the way he was living it. Out of that emerged a renewed approach that meant making new habits, new thinking, new ways to treat people, and most of all, forgiveness, a cornerstone of his campaign to be better each day than the one before.

Today, Adam Marburger is the president and CEO of Ascent Dealer Services, an insurance agency specializing in building wealth for automotive, RV, and powersports dealers across the nation. His tremendous track record in retail automotive landed him on the list of “Automotive News 40 under 40,” which launched him as one of the most sought-after coaches in the industry. He is also the president/CEO of The Marburger Investment Group, specializing in single-family rentals and renovating properties in the St. Louis area. Meanwhile, A2 Investment Group focuses its efforts on multifamily and commercial real estate.

In 2018 he launched Alton Family Martial Arts, an outgrowth of his own love of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where he is a Black Belt and possessor of a National Championship, and six World Medalist titles. At one point, he also served as the leading Midwest promoter for MMA and other forms of fighting sports. His latest venture, Dental Protection Group, launched in 2023, focuses on insurance and legacy wealth building for dental practices and labs, showing his ability to diversify and grow. Today, his greatest joy is in spending time with his three daughters.

Adam is also bringing his brand of success to a new personalized coaching platform, “The Growth Zone,” that is jumpstarting people from a life half-lived to one fully empowered. He truly cares about making a difference.

In today’s episode, Adam discusses his new book, You'tr the F*ing Problem: A Guide to Getting Out of Your Own Way. For more information about Adam visit AdamMarburger.com. You may also purchase his book on Amazon.com

Retired Fire Captain, Christy Warren talks about her book Flash Point which chronicles her journey with PTSD and gives hope to all afflicted. ChristyEWarren.com #PTSD #firefighters #firstresponders #lawenforcement #paramedics #dispatchers #resilency #mentalhealth #recovery #suicideprevention

--------------------
SHOW NOTES
--------------------

For twenty-five years, paramedic and firefighter Christy Warren put each tragic, traumatizing call she responded to in a box and closed the lid. One day, however, the box got too full and the lid blew open—and she found herself unable to close it again. Her brain locked her inside a movie theater in which film after film of gut-wrenching scenes from her career played over and over again; she found herself incapable of forgiving herself for what happened at one call in particular. Caught in a loop of shame, anger, irritability, and hypervigilance—classic signs of PTSD—she began to spiral, even to the point of considering suicide, and yet still she was reluctant to seek help.

In the end, it took almost losing her marriage to force Christy into action—but once she began to reach out, she found a whole army of folks waiting and ready to help her. The team of people supporting her eventually grew to include an EMDR therapist, a psychiatrist, her peers at a trauma retreat, and a lawyer who made the case for medical retirement and worker's compensation. Along the way, Christy learned the vital truths that made it possible to keep going even in her darkest moments—that post-traumatic stress was literally a brain injury; that suicide and alcohol were not the only ways out; that asking for help was a sign of strength, not weakness; and that although it was ultimately up to her to do the work to change the dialogue in her head, she was not alone.

Christy Warren is a retired fire captain from the Berkeley Fire Department in California. She has twenty-five years of service as a professional paramedic and eighteen years as a professional firefighter/paramedic. After being diagnosed with PTSD in 2014, she retired from the fire service; since then, she has become a triathlete, completed the Escape from Alcatraz swim five times, and earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Washington State University. She volunteers as a Peer at the West Coast Post-trauma Retreat and hosts the podcast The Firefighter Deconstructed.

In today’s episode, James and Christy talk about her book Flashpoint: A Firefighter’s Journey through PTSD, which chronicles her career and recovery from PTSD. It gives hope and a purpose for first responders and their families who struggle with PTSD.

SHOW NOTES

Listen to the audio version of this interview.

Maybe you’ve been to France or Italy, but unless you’ve traveled to some of the remote parts of the world, it is hard to fathom how the rest of its citizens live, including culture, politics, and day-to-day existence. Not to mention the sheer beauty of this planet. As a traveler (whether in person or from your “armchair”), it’s up to you to try and make sense of it all – to leave your prejudices at home, together with stereotypes and clichés. Only then can you really appreciate civilization for what it truly is.

The world today comprises 193 countries, and Boris Kester, today’s guest, has visited them all. As he notes, Adventure begins where the familiar ends. A city you’re visiting for the first time, a path you’ve never followed before, a mountain you’ve never climbed. Unknown scents, unusual sounds. Meeting people whose language you don’t speak and whose traditions you don’t know. Together with curiosity comes surprise and wonder about all that is odd.

In Today’s episode, Boris and James talk about his new book, The If you’re thinking of planning a trip anywhere, or even if you never want to leave the comfort of home but want to explore all the excitement the world has to offer, The Long Road to Cullaville will open up regions unknown. Reading like a travel thriller, Boris Kester’s sixteen vivid (and often hair-raising) stories offer a look at risk-taking, world politics, love, and heartwarming humanity. While the accounts are largely personal, his insights are invaluable.

Dear Ana,

Your spirit exudes a quiet brilliance and strength that has touched everyone around you. In every moment of crisis or need, you have been the steady rock – the youngest child who became the pillar of her family.

Time and again, you’ve placed others’ hearts before your own, carrying their worries and pains with grace.

I want to acknowledge the immense inner strength it takes to do this. You have quietly carried others through their darkest hours, often without anyone even noticing the weight you bear.

That selfless courage and deep compassion do not go unseen – I see it, and I admire you for it with all my heart.

Your Boundless Love and Gentle Care

For years, you have cared for your aging parents with a profound and tender love. Though you are a daughter, you’ve given them a deeply maternal love, nurturing and protecting them as if you were cradling their very spirits.

You witnessed your parents share 70 years of marriage – a lifetime of love – and you devoted yourself to honoring that love in their twilight years.

When your father’s steps grew unsteady, you were there to hold him up. When your mother’s tears fall now, you are by her side to wipe them away.

You became the gentle moonlight guiding them through the night – a beacon of comfort in their vulnerable moments.

Such devotion is a beautiful reflection of who you are. The love you give is boundless, and it has been the greatest gift to your family.

Your father left this world wrapped in the warmth of your care, and your mother remains here, grateful for the safe haven your presence provides.

The Beauty and Burden of Being So Giving

There is both beauty and burden in being a soul as giving as yours.

The beauty lies in your empathy – in how deeply you connect with and uplift those around you. Because of you, others feel seen and safe; your compassionate heart has been a light in their darkness.

Yet I know this kind of giving can weigh heavily on you. You have often carried immense responsibility alone, never wanting to trouble anyone else with your own needs.

In protecting others’ feelings, you’ve sometimes had to hide your own. This is the silent burden you’ve borne: the exhaustion that comes from always being the strong one, the ache of sorrow held quietly in your heart so that others may not worry.

Please hear this truth: your feelings and needs matter just as much as anyone else’s.

Even the strongest hearts need rest and healing. Even the most giving soul deserves to receive.

It is not selfish to feel tired or overwhelmed; it is human.

The love you so freely pour out is not meant to leave you empty – you, too, must be nourished by love and care, including your own.

Holding Space for Your Own Grief

Ana, my friend, in this moment, you are grieving the loss of your father. In the same breath, you are comforting your mother through her grief.

You have been so focused on being her shelter that I wonder if you’ve had the chance to hold space for your own sorrow.

Remember that your grief is your own, a sacred reflection of the love you have for your dad. It deserves time and tenderness.

Allow yourself to feel every tear, every tremor of your aching heart, without judgment or delay.

You do not have to be “the strong one” every second of the day.

Perhaps in the quiet of early morning or the stillness of night, you can find a gentle moment just for you – to sit with your memories of Dad, to cry or to pray, to whisper whatever is in your soul.

Give yourself permission to mourn, separate from your mother’s grief.

It is okay if your experience of loss is different from hers. There is no need to compare or minimize it.

Your father was your hero, your friend, your protector – losing him is huge for you, and it’s okay to admit that.

By holding space for your grief, you honor the depth of love between you and your father.

In truth, grief is love – love reaching out for someone who is no longer physically here.

Every sob, every pang in your chest is love with nowhere to go for now.

Be gentle with that love, and with yourself. Let it flow, let it be felt.

You are not letting anyone down by allowing yourself to mourn; instead, you are giving your pain the compassion it needs to heal.

Your Right to Live and Feel Fully

As you care for your mother and honor your father’s memory, please remember that your life is yours as well.

You have your own heart, your own journey, and you have every right to live it fully.

For so long, you’ve been the devoted daughter, the tireless caregiver, shaping your days and nights around your family’s needs.

Now, in this new chapter of life, it’s time to gently affirm your own needs and dreams too.

This doesn’t mean you love your mother any less or abandon any duties – it means expanding the circle of compassion to include yourself.

You are a brilliant, capable woman with hopes and desires that are just as important as those you tend in others.

If a friend came to you with the weariness and heartache you carry now, wouldn’t you urge them to rest, to breathe, to allow some comfort in?

Offer that same kindness to yourself, Ana.

You have agency and a voice – it is okay to say, “I need a moment” or “I could use some help today.”

It is okay to seek joy and laughter, even as you grieve.

It is okay to live and not just exist for others.

Your father always wanted you to be happy; your mother, even in her sorrow, would not want you to lose yourself entirely.

The love you have given your family has been a beautiful part of you, but it is not the only part of you.

You are allowed to pursue the things that bring you light, whether it’s indulging in a favorite book for an hour or dreaming about your own future.

Your soul has its own path to walk, alongside caring for those you love.

Embracing that truth is not selfish – it is necessary and just.

Evolving Through Loss into Light

This loss is now a woven strand in the tapestry of your life. It hurts beyond words – and yet, within this pain lies the seed of transformation.

I have deep faith in your capacity to evolve through this moment of loss.

Today your grief is raw and all-consuming, and it may feel like it will never fade. But little by little, as you allow yourself to feel and heal, something quietly begins to shift.

The deep sorrow you carry now will carve out space in your heart – a space that, in time, can be filled with even more compassion, understanding, and love.

Just as a forest grows richer after a fire, your soul will grow around this grief, finding new strength in the tenderness it has taught you.

One day, you will notice that the memories of your father bring more smiles than tears, that his love has become a warm light within you, guiding you forward.

One day, you will realize you have not only survived this, but have been reborn with a wiser, even more loving spirit.

Your father’s presence will be with you always – in your own kind eyes when you look in the mirror, in the gentle words you offer your mother, in the very way you continue to love.

In that sense, he lives on through you, and you carry his legacy of love into the future.

Through this journey of grief, may you also rediscover yourself.

You are Ana – a woman of remarkable strength, compassion, and light.

These qualities have seen your family through their darkest times. Now let them see you through as well.

Lean on your faith, if you have it, or on the love of friends and family who care for you.

Lean on the fond memories of your father’s laughter and wisdom – let them be a balm when nights are hard.

And when you feel lost, remember that the same light you gave to others burns inside you too, ready to guide you step by step.

In admiration and friendship,

– James
